Young Artists Program

Mission Statement:

Opera Voce is dedicated to presenting multicultural performances and resources that embrace a global perspective, which makes opera accessible for the benefit, enrichment, and education of its audience.

How We Do It!

Since 1993 our internationally acclaimed ensemble, Opera in the Hood, has entertained and enlightened audiences by presenting a contemporary edge to traditional operatic music. For 11 years we have invited youth to perform with us and learn from us. We have drawn on our friends and supporters to work with select youth to develop their skills and further their interest in opera.

The Young Artists Program is the formal development of our informal work with youth. Our Young Artists learn their craft, meet professionals in their field, have performance and competition opportunities, and enjoy the friendship and connections they establish with other young artists and professionals.

Young Artists Program:

Our Young Artists Program provides career guidance and training for young singers/actors in all aspects of a career in opera including the study of roles, acting skills, languages and diction, movement, and theater arts. Young Artists are also given instruction in such non-performing skills as audition techniques, role preparation, and the introduction of career opportunities.

Our Young Artist Program is a 26-week program that begins October first and ends April 30. The program calendar coincides with the public school calendar. We also offer a summer program that begins July first and ends on Labor Day with a performance at the NYS Fair.

Members of the Young Artists Program help us take opera from the stage and bring it into the community with informal community recitals. These performances are free to the public. Additionally, Young Artists have opportunities to attend opera and theatre performances, participate in Master Classes, and are encouraged to take advantage of competition opportunities.

We hold an audition for each session. Youth between the ages of 13 to 21 are encouraged to apply. Individuals older than 21 looking for skill development and performance opportunities are also welcome to apply.

Audition Information:

The Program is open to young singers and actors who are seriously studying their art and ready to build skills for their career. Though we traditionally work with youth between the ages of 13 and 21, we encourage any singer or actor interested in auditioning to apply. There aren't any age restrictions.

Applicants should print and complete the application on this website and mail it to us along with their 8 x 10 photograph and detailed resumé for consideration. There aren't deadlines for submitting your application. Applications are accepted year round. Auditions are held twice a year and applicants will be informed of upcoming auditions.
